Top 5 qualities to be a successful Freelance Music Producer

You may know a few people who quit their full time job to become Freelance Music Producers ( Crazy right !! But sounds like a dream )
We spoke to few of them who had no professional training / contacts when they started their journey and are still working as a full-time music freelancers .

Thinking , dreaming and being consumed with only one thing over and over again isn't easy to do at all . Make sure you really want this , because you will have to go through a lot of stress , money issues and many sleepless nights

You may say I fail to acknowledge all the bad things right now ! But believe me , there are always more good than bad things , and after you've been in the game for around 3 years or so, you'll be able to spot the difference between good and bad.

Here are some key advice they shared . .

Time and constant dedication

Like everything else , it takes time , passion and dedication to reach your goal . And we all know that there is no magic formula , you will have to go through the ups and downs ( what we call experience ) , so make sure to enjoy the Journey !!

You will be your own boss.

You've heard this one so many times that it's getting boring . But trust me , being a boss is much harder than being an employee . You must take care of so many things by yourself ( and remember they are your own responsibility , not your friends/family ) : Writing songs, Recording, Mixing & Mastering, and promoting yourself on social media.

Be open to new experiences and keep learning different areas of the Industry

Do not settle with what you think you are good at or just your strengths !!

Remember you are a freelancer , so no ones stops you from learning new skills and exploring new opportunities . You never know what you will turn out to be best at , keep exploring .

It is important to not only be an expert in your skills but to learn and keep adding to your skills and experience. For example, when I began as a music producer, I did not know how to use Pro Tools, which is the industry standard software for recording audio. This was a big issue for me because many artists would want to record with me and use Pro Tools, but I had no idea how to use it.

Luckily, I had someone in my life who taught me Pro Tools (for free) and I fell in love with the program immediately. This opened new doors for me because now artists could come record with me (in my city) and I could charge them using their own computer and Pro Tools.

So if you are a freelance video editor, learn Final Cut Pro or Avid. If you are a freelance copywriter, learn how to write effectively on different platforms such as blogs or websites. If you are a freelance photographer, learn how to edit images or use Adobe Lightroom effectively. You get the idea.

Critical listening

Listening is the key to make good music !! You need to understand what has gone into Producing that musical track , this will help you to make your sound better .

Listen to your sound and compare it with the great tracks you love . Identify the elements of the sounds - be it reverb , echo , compression . . and understand how they are affecting the sound .

Music production is one of the most crucial elements in the entire process of making great tracks. Listening is the most important skill that every producer must learn in order to develop their craft. Music production is a multi-disciplinary art. It combines elements of different fields such as beat making, sound design, mixing, arranging, etc. One of the keys to successful music producing is critical listening.

Introducing Critical Listening:

Critical listening is a skill that every musician, songwriter and record producer must master in order to be successful. You must be able to dissect music and understand how it was made in order to create better songs or tracks.

It takes years for your ears to develop and understand these elements . So , just keep going and enjoy the Journey !!

Make a plan and release your track

This is NOT what most music producers do , we keep tweaking our tracks to get the Perfect sound !! And the song which was made perfectly at first go , ends up being deleted , due to over thinking .

It’s only when you have a plan that you are able to release your music and hence , be a successful music producer.

For example, if you have a plan of one track a month, you know that it would take nine months to make 9 amazing tracks. You also know that if you stick to the plan and finish those 9 tracks successfully, you can then release an EP and become popular.

Let us look at all the different ways in which you could plan your music production.

Plan of one song a week:

Plan of one EP every month:

Plan of four tracks every month:

Plan of five songs every two weeks:

And so on…

Now, each of these plans might sound good to you. However note that everyone works at a different speed. The above plans are just a suggestion to get you started.

Do not over-do your tracks . Plan → create → get feedback from people you trust → revise → release → move on !!

Be honest and listen to your customers

As a freelancer , first thing you need to do is understanding customer's requirement ( if you are working for any client ) .

You need to think how they visualize the Project . And then discuss ideas , thoughts before you jump into creating it already . And be open and honest with progress , stay focussed , never miss deadlines ( unless exceptional times ) .

These habits will help you stand out as a successful freelancer
