ONDC: Technical Architecture behind a Decentralized Network

Introduction to Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC)

ONDC is an initiative to connect all the buyers to all the sellers available online. It aims to make it easier for people to find what they are looking for and purchase it, while also making sure that they can get a better price.

It has been designed in such a way that it will be open and decentralized.

This means that there is no single entity controlling who can access the network or what content is available on there. Instead, it will be governed by a community of users and stakeholders who will have control over how the network should work.

Technical Architecture of Open Network and How it Works?

ONDC's architecture is based on Beckn Protocol, which was designed to create a decentralized network where no one owns the data, and where all participants are free to interact with each other.

ONDC is a decentralized network that is open to anyone who wants to participate.

Beckn protocol specification consists of the Core APIs, the Core schema, the Domain taxonomy, the Communication protocol, and the Authentication and Smart Contracts component.

Core APIs include Transaction APIs which are modeled after the order lifecycle (discovery order, fulfillment, post-fulfillment) and are asynchronous, and Supporting APIs which are mostly synchronous.

The Core schema specifies the structure of the data in the commerce interactions and is modeled after the OpenAPI 3.0 specification. It is the data abstraction layer for the APIs.

Domain taxonomies add industry-specific attributes to the elements of the Core schema and specify the supported values at country, city, or network levels.

The Communication protocol contains the Core API implementation rules that make possible for a platform or app  to become a part of a Beckn-enabled network.

The Authentication and Smart Contracts component specifies the way in which participants authenticate on the network and the conditions under which this is done.

ONDC Protocol

The Open Network for Decentralised Commerce (ONDC) is built on top of the Beckn protocol, which handles discovery, ordering, fulfilment and post-fulfilment.

The ONDC network has an extension layer responsible for transaction contracts for different domains, as well as grievance, policies, online dispute resolution, open data and registration.

Some of the major features of ONDC architecture includes:

- An open protocol with a community grievance model

- Verifiable decentralised identity

- Digitally signed bilateral transactions

- Bilateral negotiation through the protocol

- Data privacy & security by design

- Global interoperabilty

This makes ONDC a great platform for businesses who want to conduct peer-to-peer transactions in a secure and efficient manner.
