A digital audio workstation (DAW) is an electronic device or application software used for recording, editing and producing audio files.

It is used for producing and recording music, songs, speech, radio, television, soundtracks, podcasts, sound effects and everything that needs good audio quality.

The first DAW was released in 1985 and it was called the Sound Designer. The first popular digital audio workstation was the Akai S900, which was introduced in 1988.

The first digital audio workstation software was Pro Tools, which was originally developed by Digidesign (now Avid) in the early 1990s. Today, there are many DAWs available, including Pro Tools, Logic Pro, Ableton Live, FL Studio and GarageBand. DAWs are used in recording studios, music production, and live performances.

Its primary author is Paul Davis, who was also responsible for the JACK Audio Connection Kit. It is intended as a digital audio workstation suitable for professional use.
